| Rare Megamouth Shark #26 Stranded In Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines
A female megamouth shark 504 cm long and about 1 ton in weight was stranded on the beach of Barangay Namocon, Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines around 5 pm on 4 November 2004. SEAFDEC FishWorld was informed of the stranding the next morning. I immediately recognized the very rare megamouth, and my heart skipped a beat. The megamouth is a recent scientific discovery, the first one having been caught off Hawaii in 1976 and described as Megachasma pelagios by L. Taylor, L. Compagno, and Struhsaker in 1983. The one stranded in Namocon is the third recorded in the Philippines, and only the 26th specimen recorded from around the world, according to Dr. George H. Burgess, Director of the Florida Program for Shark Research, Florida Museum of Natural History (http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu). The formalin-preserved carcass is now specimen AQDM2004 of the fish collection of FishWorld at the Tigbauan Main Station of the SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department.

_______________________________________________ Mayor Excel attends PGMA's SONA 2009 | A SYMBOL OF PEACE NOW RISES AT TIGBAUAN
A Day Care Center and a school building, two structures built in Barangay Cansilayan, Tigbauan, Iloilo now epitomizes the symbol of peace.
These infrastructure projects were the result of the consultations made from the people themselves who identified what their priority needs were to uplift their condition.
Barangay Cansilayan was identified under the RPA-ABB peace agreement as a peace and development area. It has a population of 338 and agriculture is the only means of livelihood. |
The barangay folks were grateful because while the building could only cater for Grade one pupils as of now, the children were saved from a long walk to attend school. They hope that another building for Grade 2 will soon be put up.
Presidential Assistant for Western Visayas, Raul Banias said during the inauguration that the two structures which symbolize peace in the said barangay, will help serve as a step to educate “our children and build the culture of peace in the community”.
PA Banias said that under the Kalayaan Barangay Program of the government, more than 80 projects in 36 barangays in Western Visayas are implemented and “this is a commitment of the government under the peace process with the RPA-ABB”.
He also acknowledged the support of the United Nations Development fund Program and the engineering brigade of the 3rdInfantry Division of the Philippine Army.
Ms. Carmel Pami-Ulanday, director of the Official Development Assistance Support Unit said that other projects undertaken by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace process are loated in Badiangan- a water system, San Joaquin- school building, Leon- formation of the Barangay Peace Development Councils.
Present during the inauguration of the day care center and school building were local officials of Tigbauan, Iloilo headed by Mayor James Excelsior M. Torres. BAGS FOR EXCELLENT EDUCATION
Education is one of the main thrusts of the administration of Mayor Excel Torres.
The students of Tigbauan Central Elementary School and Tigbauan National High School were surprised by the said mayor during his visit together with his wife and Executive Assistant Mrs. Ma. Lizza Fajardo Torres, Community Affairs Officer, Mrs. Linda Fe T. Camiña, Information officer, Mr. Kenny Arias, and Private Secretary, Mr. Wendell T. Tamorite, to distribute school bags. The administration of Mayor Excel Torres will be giving out 4,675 pcs to cover the entire Municipality of Tigbauan.
"Sugod lang kita anay sa bag kag akon tinguhaon nga sa sunod nga tuig maysulode na ini nga mga school supplies" delivered by Mayor Torres during his speeches in both schools. He added "Limited ang aton LSB Fund to accomodate sang aton gusto nga mga proyekto para sa aton mga eskwelahan gani bag lang anay ang aton masarangan."
Hope that this project of Mayor Excel Torres will be valued by our students as he valued education placing it as one of his major thrusts in his administration. LGU CONDUCTS TRAINING FOR BOTIKA NG BARANGAY OPERATORS
