SALUDAN de TIGBAUAN

SALUDAN CAME FROM THE WORD "SALUD". TIGBAUAN IS A COASTAL TOWN AND IT'S SEA WATER ABOUNDS IN DIFFERENT KIND OF FISHES. AN EXCERPT FROM A BOOK, "THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS" BY BLAIR AND ROBERTSON, OF WHICH FR. PEDRO CHIRINO RELATED HIS EXPERIENCE AND OBSERVATION ABOUT OUR TOWN AND STATED THAT; "THE VILLAGE ITSELF WAS ON THE SAME SHORE, AT THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER, OF WHICH AS WELL AS THE SEA, YIELDS VARIOUS KINDS OF FISH, EXCELLENT AND PLENTIFUL, WHICH, I, MYSELF HAVE ENJOYED IN THE ABUNDANCE. AS THEY WERE CONTINUALLY FISHING ON THE BEACH, USUALLY WITH THREE OR FOUR NETS, THEY NEVER MADE HAUL WITHOUT DEVOUTLY REGALING US WITH A PART OF IT".

Tigbauan is a municipality rich in history and legacy. From its founding in 1575 to the present, the history of our town continues to fold and unfold.

The Tigbauanons take pride of its town being the site and seat of many historical events and home of many government and semi government offices.

It became the second purblo after Oton in Western Visayas. It is the location of the first boarding school for boys in the Philippines. Due to the loyalty and service of the natives to Spain during the Spanish time  it was granted the encomienda by the Spanish government with Don Esteban Figueroa as the Encomiendero.

In the course of time, improvements have been made tpwards its development. As it progresses, however, it has its share of retrogressions when World War II and natural calamities ravaged its thriving economy and destroyed its plain and quaint edifices. Severely damaged was the church, the town's landmark but it has also undergone physical and aesthetic repairs. Today, it is one of the attractions because of its rococo door and baroque facade. only parts trivially ruined by the earthquake and preserved up to this day.

At present, it is the home of the Aquaculture department of the South East Asian Fisheries Development Center or SEAFDEC: the site of one of the earliest electric cooperative established in the Philippines, the location of the Sibalom River Irrigation and the site of the St. Therese-MTC Colleges, a learning institution offering various courses with specialization in Maritime Industry. The former and first lady mayor of Tigbauan, mayor Myrna M. Torres has invisioned Tigbauan to be a peaceful and progressive town. As a Mayor, she instill in the minds of every Tigbauanons to love this town and to cherish its rich historical leagcy. During her first term in 1998, she signed an executive oreder declaring the third week of October every year as the "Adlaw ng Tigbauan".

To the present time, the season for gathering rice crop is mostly in October. During this time of the year, the fisherfolks also rejoice for the bountiful catch. Thus, Adlaw sang Tigbauan is celebrated in October. To make this day more significant, the Saludan Festival was launched.

Saludan came from the word "Salud". Tigbauan is a coastal town and its sea water abounds in different kind of fishes. Since the beginning of recorded history - Spanish time, our fishermen have used nets or woven bamboos to catch fish from the sea or river and in the local dialect, it was called "salud".Primarily our farm product is rice, whether crude farming ways and tools or modern agricultural machineries are used, we use the term "salud".
